Questions and Answers

Focus your thoughts for your next doctor visit

A successful discussion with your doctor often depends on the way you answer his or her questions. Rather than responding with "OK" or "fine" to the question "How are you feeling?" try to provide as much information as possible. This will help your doctor better understand you and your condition, so he or she can ultimately be better prepared to assess your treatment.

Writing down your thoughts and feelings before your appointment is not only a good emotional outlet, but it can also help you and your doctor see how you're progressing with your treatment. Keep a progress journal, or use the questions here as a guide.

Prepare your questions

Below is a list of questions to help you talk with your doctor during your next office visit. Choose those that best apply to you.

  • What can I expect to get out of treatment?
  • Should I see a psychiatrist or other type of therapist?
  • Which medication is right for me? Why?
  • What are the benefits of this medication?
  • What should I know about side effects?

In addition to these questions, be sure to tell your doctor:

  • Specific symptoms you are experiencing, such as constant sadness, worry, unexplained muscle aches, or low energy
  • If you've lost interest in your favorite activities
  • If you're less involved with family and friends than you once were
  • About your previous treatment history
  • Medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, as well as herbal or dietary supplements, that you are currently taking
  • Whether you drink alcohol
  • If you are pregnant or nursing
